More information about Shakti Naam Yoga and Meditation
History
Naam Yoga was developed by Dr. Joseph Michael Levry (Gurunam) based on Kundalini Yoga (as taught by Yogi Bhajan). By combining Shakti Naam techniques (Sukshma Vyayama) with an understanding of universal laws derived from the teachings of Universal Kabbalah, a yoga and meditation technique was created that promotes physical and mental fitness as well as personal spiritual development.
Key Content and Impact
Naam Yoga and Shakti Naam open up all the meridian systems in the body and massage our glands and organs in a specific way, allowing blockages to dissolve and energy to flow freely once again.
Key elements of the Shakti Naam yoga and meditation practice are based on:
- The Science of Breathing
Pranayama, energizing, calming, detoxifying, and other breathing techniques - The Science of Sound
Generating vibrations through healing sounds and mantras (–> Music / Mantras by Rootlight) - The Science of Mudras
Activation of meridians and brain regions through specific hand and finger gestures - The Science of Universal Kabbalah*
The study of visible and invisible natural laws, including planetary influences
*The teachings of Universal Kabbalah are non-denominational. They teach us to understand how we shape our lives through our thoughts, emotions, and actions, and how we can positively change and influence them.
Shakti Naam – Sukshma Vyayama and Kundalini

Exercises done while standing, sitting, and moving around add variety and fun
Naam Yoga combines the best of the Eastern yoga tradition with the best of Western wisdom, Universal Kabbalah. It includes, among other things, elements of Kundalini yoga, breathing, mudra, and meditation techniques, as well as powerful mantras that have an invigorating, regenerating, strengthening, and harmonizing effect. With regular practice, Shakti Naam Yoga and meditation lead to inner strength, clarity, and serenity.
Shakti Naam exercises are very powerful yoga techniques performed while standing or sitting, which are still largely unknown in the Western world. They originate from the Sukshma Vyayama tradition, also known as the “Yoga of Immortality.” Yogis say that these techniques can effectively prevent or slow down the aging process and the health issues associated with it.
Shakti Naam works like a form of self-acupuncture; it:
- stretches and opens up our body
- opens all meridian systems and our lungs
- This brings a great deal of energy (prana, life force) into our bodies, reaching every cell
- releases tension in the body
- massages vital organs in a targeted and effective manner
- cleanses, renews, and enriches the blood
- relaxes the autonomic nervous system
- strengthens the parasympathetic nervous system
- balances/regulates blood pressure
- strengthens the immune system
- balances the endocrine system (glandular and hormonal system)
The Science of Breathing
Breathing exercises are called pranayama. Naam Yoga is the science and mastery of the breath and the production of sound vibrations. These are the most important aspects of Naam Shakti. By controlling the breath, we can control the mind. A calm and composed person breathes calmly and slowly. An emotional and tense state of mind, on the other hand, increases the breathing rate.
When combined with the Naam or the sound vibrations of the mantra, the breath awakens the hidden creative energy, also known as Adi Shakti or the Kundalini force.
Some important breathing techniques include, for example, Fire Breathing, Breath of Glow, Segmented Breathing, Sitali Pranayama, Navel Pump Breathing, special nasal breathing, and many more, each of which has a specific effect.
The Science of Sound / Mantras
A mantra is a sequence of sounds designed to elevate and transform consciousness through the repetition (recitation/vibration) of specific rhythms. Mantras are encoded sounds, comparable to telephone numbers. Each has a unique effect. Mantra means “projection of the mind” and is a technique for directing our mind. Mantras are mystical words, yet they are far more valuable than the words we use in everyday language.
While studying human anatomy, experts discovered a connection between a specific nerve center in the brain and certain sound vibrations. The greatest strength of the human being lies in the frontal lobe and the upper palate. Our entire personality is regulated by our frontal lobe, which we can control with the help of mantras. Controlling the frontal lobe prevents impulsive behavior and fosters a meditative state of mind. Those who regulate and control the nervous system through chanting can free themselves from illness.
The combination of sound, resonance, and rhythm creates an altered state of consciousness that gives rise to new patterns of thought. However, the effectiveness of a mantra depends on the level of consciousness. The more one chants, the higher one’s consciousness becomes.

The Science of Mudras

Mudras … Energy Circuits of the Hands
Mudras are healing symbols that act as energetic keys. When we use our hands and fingers as symbols and energy circuits, we can awaken our consciousness and activate the specific energy patterns necessary to produce the desired (healing) effect. The effectiveness of a mudra depends largely on how long it is held. When a mudra is practiced regularly over an extended period, it creates an energetic pathway that brings forth the mudra’s original power and purpose.
The practice of mudras is based on the fundamental principle that everything that exists in the macrocosm can also be found in the microcosm. Mudra Yoga balances the five elements—fire, earth, water, air, and space (ether)—within the body. Mudras support the flow of thoughts and prepare us for a more subtle perception. The repetition of specific, recurring postures that purposefully refine our consciousness allows us to recognize instinctive behavioral patterns and develop the ability to let them go. In this way, Mudra Yoga positively influences health and mood.
The fingers represent the five elements that are part of our bio-electrical body system. When we are in optimal health, this electrical current flows unimpeded through the body’s meridians. If blockages hinder the flow of energy, this can lead to illness, lethargy, weight fluctuations, mood swings, and so on. Mudras dissolve such blockages and strengthen the life force, allowing the body to heal.
